Can Hup and Steph handle the San Francisco Marathon?
Today when I was done working out and was grabbing my stuff from the 24 Hour Fitness locker room I noticed a t shirt that a guy was wearing next to me. The shirt had a logo on the back that included the Golden Gate Bridge, a tennis shoe and some text that said In Training — 7/26/09 — San Francisco.
Me, being the genius that I am asked the guy, “So, are you running a marathon in July?”. He confirmed that he indeed was going to run the San Francisco Marathon and that it was going to be his first time giving it a shot. He also said that he’s run a couple of half-marathons before, but that in his mind running a full marathon is the real deal. I would have to agree with that statement.
I then started telling him how Stephanie has said that she won’t marry me until after I run a marathon (not to mention it’s #5 on our 50 Goals For 2009) and how we’ve talked about running one together before our wedding date on August 29th. To that he asked what the heck I was waiting on and told me that I had better get moving on it if I’m serious.
This actually got me thinking about whether or not Stephanie and I could actually be ready in just 4 short months for a marathon. I mean, it’s almost exactly one month before our wedding, which is perfect timing and not to mention that the long distance training runs will give us plenty of time to hash out the rest of our wedding details.
I mean, we did dominate an 8k a few weeks back — how much harder can a marathon be?
I have a feeling that I had better get some inspiration from the Ultra Marathon Man, Dean Karnazes. You know, the guy that ran 50 marathons in 50 states in 50 days. That makes training for and running one marathon pretty easy, dontcha’ think?
So what do you think? Can we handle the San Francisco Marathon? Let us know in the comments.

I totally think y’all can handle it. Four months is cutting it a wee bit close, though. When I ran a half-marathon, I trained for four months (but I don’t think I was as in-shape as you two), and my friend who ran a full marathon trained for five (she worked out regularly before that). Take good care of yourselves, cross-train on the days that you’re not running to build muscle strength, give up the drinking altogether (yeah, seriously, altogether), be ready to run early and long on the weekends (your social life will take a bit of a hit; be forewarned!), and you should be a-okay.
That’s some awesome advice, Fayza. But, are you sure that I need to stop drinking? Oh, geez.
It’s all about pacing yourself so you don’t get wore out too soon.
